Core Principles of Ironing Woven Fabrics
Woven fabrics are woven from warp and weft yarns, possessing a stable structure but easily deformed by high temperatures. Proper ironing should follow these principles:
1. Temperature Grading: Different materials have significantly different heat resistance. For example, cotton and linen can withstand 180-200℃ (refer to the International Fabric Care Association standard), while silk only requires 120-160℃. Synthetic fibers (such as polyester) are recommended at low temperatures (110-130℃).
2. Humidity Adjustment: Natural fibers (such as cotton and linen) can be ironed with steam, while synthetic fibers should be dry ironed or ironed with a damp cloth to prevent melting.
3. Directional Ironing: Move the iron along the warp and weft direction of the fabric to avoid pulling at an angle, which can cause deformation.
Step-by-Step Ironing Guide
1. Pre-treatment:
- Wash and dry the fabric. Residual stains may harden at high temperatures.
- If the fabric is too dry, spray water or use the steam function to soften the fibers.
2. Tool Preparation:
- Choose a steam iron with temperature control, or prepare a pure cotton pressing cloth (0.5-1mm thick recommended).
- The ironing board surface must be flat to avoid leaving marks from raised areas.
3. Practical Procedure:
- Reverse Side First: Iron the reverse side of the fabric first, especially dark-colored or easily shiny fabrics (such as suit fabric).
- Sectional Treatment: Divide the garment into areas such as cuffs, collar, and front, ironing each section for 5-10 seconds before moving it.
- Special Areas: Around buttons, use the tip of the iron to press around them, avoiding direct pressure; for wrinkles, stretch the fabric before ironing.
Personalized Treatment of Common Woven Fabrics
1. Cotton and Linen: High temperature + steam can effectively remove wrinkles, but note that pure linen is prone to shrinkage; it is recommended to pre-iron at medium temperature (160℃) before adjustment.
2. Silk/Wool:
- Silk requires a mat and should not be sprayed with water (may leave water stains); temperature should not exceed 160℃.
- Wool should be steam ironed (2-3cm away from the fabric) or covered with a damp towel and pressed.
3. Blended Fabrics: Use fibers with lower heat resistance in the composition, such as 65% cotton + 35% polyester; set the temperature according to polyester (130℃).
